Staying healthy with CBD

This was more than likely not how the year was supposed to go.  Maybe you had plans for the “vacation of a lifetime” or you were arranging a wedding – yours or a member of your family – or you were hoping to get together with an out-of-town friend after many years of not seeing each other. But the pandemic put those plans on the back burner. As for your business, no way did you ever think you would be shut down by the government because of a pandemic. It sounds like something straight out of a science fiction novel!

But this has been how 2020 has rolled out and to say it has caused major uncertainty and stress is an understatement.  Even now, for many the lockdowns and concerns about the pandemic are not over. Interacting with others continues to be a major worry. Some people have not left their homes since March when the initial lockdowns occurred and to this day, some only leave their house for food shopping or medical appointments. Even if they bike ride or take a walk; it’s strictly solo. Social interactions are only online or on the phone.

The isolation brought on because of the pandemic may be having an impact on your physical and mental well-being. Sleep problems, already an issue among Americans, have become even more common during the pandemic.[1]  Also, your daily workout routine took a hit if you were a regular gym goer. Gym closures pose another challenge to maintaining health and wellness. And, too, you may be among those who are holding off visits with your doctors because of your concern about contracting the virus at a medical facility.

Give wellness a boost with CBD

Keeping healthy and maintaining a positive state of mind is always important but especially now during the isolation brought on by the pandemic. Many have already turned to cannabidiol (CBD) for wellness, but if you haven’t given it a try, you might want to consider doing so at this time. Increasingly self-care tips feature CBD as part of a daily wellness routine to address joint and muscle pain but also to reduce chronic anxiety and sleep issues.

Research suggests that in addition to impacting the endocannabinoid system, which regulates such processes as mood, appetite, memory, and more for optimal functioning; CBD may control the release of serotonin. Serotonin is the chemical that has a wide variety of functions in the body and contributes to well-being and happiness.

While more research is needed on CBD and anxiety, a 2011 study found that CBD was able to reduce Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). This preliminary study aimed to compare the effects of a simulation public speaking test (SPST) on healthy control patients and treatment-naïve SAD patients who received a single dose of CBD or placebo. Pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in the speech performance of control patients, and significantly decreased alert levels in their anticipatory speech. The placebo group presented higher anxiety, cognitive impairment, discomfort, and alert levels when compared with the control group.[2]

Some research on CBD and sleep indicates that CBD may interact with specific receptors in the endocannabinoid system to potentially affect the sleep/wake cycle.  Furthermore, by reducing the symptoms of pain and anxiety, CBD may also contribute to a more restful sleep.[3]

As part of a CBD health and wellness regimen, you’ll also want to consider other ways to incorporate CBD. If you are holding back on daily physical exercise – running, jogging or bike riding – because of joint or muscle pain, there are CBD topical creams that can help ease the pain.

Also, CBD makes a great complement to meditation, which has both physical and mental benefits. Meditation helps to clear your mind of thoughts to help relieve stress and achieve a sense of balance. It has its physical benefits as well. It can help lower blood pressure, improve heart rate and breathing. Since CBD helps to lower anxiety and shows promise as a muscle relaxant, it may help bring mind and body into balance, making it easier to get into a meditative state.
