grapefruit essential oil

Was the biblical forbidden fruit an apple? Not according to Reverend Griffith Hughes. He was a Welsh naturalist who, in the 18th century, traveled to Barbados in search of the tree that was in the Garden of Eden. In 1750, Hughes wrote a fruit description, which he nicknamed the “forbidden fruit,’’ that was an accidental hybrid of a pomelo and a sweet orange. The crop then spread to Jamaica, where a planter and magistrate John Lunan used the name grapefruit in writing about it.

In 1823, a French settler in Florida brought the grapefruit to that state. Over the next 100 years, the grapefruit was cultivated in Texas, California, and Arizona. That’s good news because otherwise, we couldn’t enjoy the benefits of grapefruit and also the essential oil it provides.

Health benefits

Grapefruit essential oil is a rich source of Vitamin C, which has antioxidant properties and helps boost the immune system. Limonene is another key constituent of essential oil.  Limonene belongs to a group of compounds known as terpenes and may offer several health benefits. Limonene has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress, and possibly disease-preventing properties. Grapefruit essential oil also has strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

Lifts the spirits

But it’s not only for its health benefits that we value grapefruit essential oil.  It is known in aromatherapy for its uplifting and stimulating scent, which is commonly used for rejuvenation. Grapefruit essential oil is used to reduce stress, stimulate circulation, increase energy, and enhance mood. The effect comes from its aroma and its stimulating effects on certain hormones that uplift the mind.

Grapefruit essential oil also is thought to improve cognition. Grapefruit essential oil has been shown to increase sympathetic or unconscious action versus a placebo. A controlled increase in brain activity can help us process information at a more effective rate, resulting in improved cognitive performance.
