Educate Clients on Facial Massage Benefits

How popular is facial massage among your clientele? If clients and prospects are not asking for this treatment, you will want to start educating them on the many facial massage benefits. Whether the goal is to look better or to treat a specific skin condition, facial massage may be exactly what they need.

The many facial massage benefits

As a therapeutic practice, the gentle yet deliberate rubbing and manipulation of the skin and face has many benefits, among them:

Anti-aging and wrinkles: Among facial massage benefits, the ability to improve skin is at the top. A study conducted in 2017 looked at the effectiveness of facial massage that included a stimulating massage device. Twenty women applied a commercial anti-aging cream to their face and neck, followed by daily treatments using the anti-aging massage device for 8 weeks. A control group of twenty-two women, with similar ages to the first group, applied the cream alone. The study found that combining the massaging device with a skin anti-aging formulation amplified the beneficial effects of the cream.[1]

Glowing skin: A study conducted in 2002 included 142 women, ages 17-63, who received a facial beauty treatment. The women were observed for a 12-week period. Twenty-seven of the women had a repeat facial beauty treatment 4–6 weeks after entering into the study, for a total of 169 massage episodes observed. The beauty regimes consisted of vigorous face massaging with creams, steaming, and the application of a face mask.

The benefits of facial beauty treatment, as mentioned by study participants, included a feeling of freshness and rejuvenation in 84 (59.1%), keeping the skin supple in 76 (53.5%), feeling of warmth and tightening of the skin in 71 (50%), and delaying the onset of wrinkles in 21 (14.8%).[2]

Facial rejuvenation: Facial massages can help to relieve tension and enhance relaxation while also boosting skin health. Fifty women performed facial muscle exercises (FME) use a Pao device (facial fitness device) for 30 seconds twice a day for 8 weeks. The exercise device boosted facial muscle thickness and cross-sectional area to encourage facial rejuvenation. [3]

Skin blood flow:  Facial massage may help blood flow, which can improve the appearance of the skin. A 2018 five-week study measured the effect of short-term massage on skin, blood and vascular activity. The study found that people who had a 5-minute facial with a massage roller had increased skin blood flow to the area for at least 10 minutes after the massage. Blood flow response to heat was significantly improved after five weeks. Researchers concluded that performing short-term facial massage with a roller increased skin blood flow, and long-term use improves the vascular dilatation response.[4]

Face massage benefits also include:

  • Helping to manage scar tissue by increasing blood flow, loosening up nearby tissues and flattening bumps.
  • Aiding in lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness, detoxify the skin, and promote a healthy complexion.
  • Improved absorption of skincare products. [5]

Know the facial massage techniques

There are various facial massage techniques, including:

  • Effleurage: Characterized by gentle, sweeping strokes across the skin’s surface. It enhances relaxation and helps to prepare the skin for deeper massage techniques and product absorption.
  • Petrissage: Skin compression, including kneading, squeezing, and pinching. Petrissage affects the deeper muscle tissue to release tension and promote circulation.
  • Swedish: Light, long strokes ease muscle tension.
  • Shiatsu: Applies pressure to muscles in the face, neck, shoulder and scalp to release tension. Results in a natural, refreshed skin glow and reduced lines in the forehead, around the mouth and the corners of the eyes.
  • Gua sha: Uses a flat stone to tone muscles and firm the skin and soften fine lines. It moves out toxic waste from the skin and is deeply relaxing.
  • Cupping: Facial cupping increase blood flow to the surface of the skin, which may help relieve muscle tension and aid in cell repair.
