The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) has announced that the results of years of research support the efficacy of massage therapy for many important health treatments, especially for pain relief and pain management. Among the health issues:

  • Chronic pain management (such as back pain, headache, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, neck and shoulder pain, and fibromyalgia);
  • Behavioral health treatment (anxiety and stress, depression, PTSD, and substance use disorder recovery);
  • Rehabilitation/physical training (athletic training/injury treatment, ergonomics, and job-related injuries, cardiac rehab, joint replacement surgery, and scar management); and
  • Acute medical conditions (cancer management, post-operative pain, lymphatic drainage, maternity, and newborn care).

AMTA reports that a survey of consumers over the past three years indicates that at last 70 percent of adult Americans who had a massage in a 12 month period did so massage for health or medical reasons. Read more.

Use Your Massage Therapy Skills at the New York City Marathon

In its 48th year, the TCS New York City Marathon had grown from the original 127 entrants and 55 finishers to over 50,000 participants last year. Massage Magazine writes that some 12,000 people volunteer each year at the New York City Marathon, and 12 to 24 of them are massage therapists.  Jim Heim, senior vice president of event development & production at NYRR and technical director of the TCS New York City Marathon, told the magazine that A pre and/or post-race massage is essential to a lot of runners to help prepare the body for the hours of running, to work through a cramp along the course, or to start the recovery process after the finish.”

(To volunteer any massage therapy service at any event in the State of New York, the therapist must be licensed in New York State per the rules and regulations via the New York State Department of Education).
