woman moisturizing skin

There’s no question about it. Winter can wreak havoc on spa and massage clients’ skin. It’s not only the lack of humidity in the air outside drawing moisture from skin that causes dryness and flakiness. There are a number of other factors that are unkind to skin at this time of year.

Central heating may leave us feeling toasty and warm, but the heat inside air means less humidity, which results in water evaporating from the skin.  Going from the cold outside to warm central heating inside also can take its toll, causing broken veins and skin redness.  And while it’s tempting to consider a hot bath or shower to ward off the cold, the heat can dissolve the skin’s protective barrier. Advise clients to stick with lukewarm baths to avoid stripping oils away from the skin.

WebMD offers a number of tips for a winter skin regimen to avoid flaking, cracking and even eczema, in which the skin becomes inflamed.  Here are some of their recommendations to share with clients:

Use sunscreen: While it may seem that sunscreen is just for summertime, not so. The winter sun, combined with glare from snow, can damage skin. Encourage clients to use sunscreen not only on their face but on their hands as well, ideally 30 minutes before going out of doors.

Wear gloves: Skin on hands is thinner than other parts of the body and has fewer oil glands; so it’s harder to keep hands moist in cold, dry weather. Wear gloves!

Use a humidifier: Humidifiers put moisture depleted by central heating back into the air. Place several small humidifiers throughout the home to help disperse moisture evenly.

Moisturize and exfoliate
