Getting Down to Essentials: Cedarwood Essential Oil

Some things are timeless. You could say that for Cedarwood essential oil. Its use goes back thousands of years for its scent and for medicinal purposes.  The ancient Egyptians also associated perfumes with immortality and so wrapped the Pharaohs in bandages impregnated with Cedarwood and other aromatic oils.[1] The ancient Greeks, Romans and even Egyptians used this oil in cosmetics, perfumes and even added them to their bath and beauty rituals.[2] Today, Cedarwood essential oil continues to be highly popular. It is calming and relaxing and is considered excellent for dealing with stress, anxiety and tension.

There are four types of Cedarwood: Himalayan, Atlas, Texan and Virginian. Himalayan and Atlas are actually believed to be the first essential oils ever distilled.  In addition to its use in cosmetics and for incense, Cedarwood oil has been used to cure illnesses ranging from cancer to rheumatoid arthritis to less severe hiccups, coughs and colds.[3]

The healthful benefits of Cedarwood oil are attributed to its extensive antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, astringent, fungicidal and insecticidal properties. Ayurvedic practitioners use preparations of Himalayan Cedarwood tree to treat diabetes, urinary tract infections, obesity, skin ailments, to aid digestion, to strengthen the heart muscles, to improve blood circulation and to treat pain.[4]
