If you like Earl Grey tea, you’re already a fan of Bergamot Oil. The rind from the nearly ripe fruit of the bergamot tree, which is thought to be a hybrid of sour orange and lemon, is used to extract Bergamot Essential Oil used for flavoring the popular tea. While the roots of the Bergamot Tree can be traced back to South East Asia, the tree was more widely cultivated in Southern Italy. In fact, Bergamot gets its name from the Italian city of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy.
The fruit of the Bergamot is not edible and is cultivated strictly for the production of its essential oil. In addition to its use as a food flavoring agent, Bergamot Oil is used extensively in perfumes because its light citrus scent is uplifting and relaxing and it blends well with other essential oils. In fact, it was a component of the original Eau de Cologne developed in Germany in the 17th century.
Bergamot Oil is often included in essential oil mixtures to reduce stress, energize, and treat depression. The oil is also included in skin care products. Like other citrus oils, Bergamot Oil is faintly astringent and toning. Treat your clients to the uplifting and relaxing benefits of bergamot oil in the treatment protocol below.
