Tackling 2025 Business Challenges

The last few years have driven home the reality of just how quickly the business landscape can change. Whoever would have imagined a global pandemic that had far-reaching economic consequences, particularly decreasing business in the service sector because of lockdowns. Disruptions in the supply chain because of the pandemic added to business pressures, making it difficult for businesses who stayed open to get the products they needed – retail and professional – to survive.

Things may have settled down, but the lasting message is that business challenges – albeit not necessarily the size and scope of a pandemic – always are waiting in the wings. You need to be prepared to deal with them to ensure that your spa or massage practice continues to thrive.

Anticipate small business challenges

While attracting new clients and retaining current ones always is a challenge, there are some challenges industry authorities have identified for 2025 small businesses will face. Among them:

Rising costs and inflation: Fast Company’s executive board points to the rising cost of “everything” from raw materials to energy prices due to inflation. Small businesses must choose between raising prices or finding ways to cut costs – not an easy decision. If you decide raising prices is the solution, be transparent with clients. They will value your honesty. The other side of the coin will be streamlining procedures.[1] For spas and massage practice, this might mean optimizing staff schedules to better align with client demand and bundling services to increase revenue and still add value to clients. Whatever you decide, do not compromise the quality of your service offering, since nothing will drive clients away faster.

Changing client behavior: Another one of the small business challenges is the need for personalization, which has been growing, and will get stronger. A 2021 report from management consulting firm McKinsey & Company[2] looked at the importance of personalized customer service and found:

·         Seventy-one percent of consumers expect companies to deliver personalized interactions. And seventy-six percent get frustrated when this does not happen.

·         Personalization drives performance and better customer outcomes. Companies that grow faster drive 40 percent more of their revenue from personalization than their slower-growing counterparts.

Personalized customer service means offering clients solutions that meet their specific needs and preferences.  Over time, personalization becomes a key driver in your unique value proposition. In today’s highly information-intensive world, the data you gather on your clients – from their service history, treatments, retail choices, schedule of visits and social media interaction with your business – is key to enabling personalized customer service. By leveraging this information, you are better able to customize and adjust treatments for healing or relaxation, as necessary, to meet a client’s individual needs.

Digital transformation and cybersecurity: Small businesses that do not adapt to technological advances in client outreach and interactions and marketing risk falling behind. For spas and massage practices, offering online booking is almost a requirement. It also is forecast that spas will conduct more of their business online, like retail sales and client consults, as consumers have grown increasingly comfortable using more services via the Internet.[3]

When it comes to technology, you cannot overlook artificial intelligence (AI). AI takes the client experience to a whole new level. By analyzing research and clinical data, AI can suggest optimal massage techniques and length of sessions for specific conditions or injuries. Factoring in client preferences, medical history, and desired outcomes, AI systems then can provide therapists with evidence-based recommendations to help them make treatment decisions.

AI-powered communication platforms can facilitate remote consultations between massage therapists and clients. By using video calls, therapists can visually assess client needs and demonstrate self-massage techniques. Even beyond that, AI algorithms would be able to analyze video recordings of client movements or posture and offer feedback and corrective exercises.

With cybersecurity on the rise – and small businesses a top challenge for cybercrime – AI can provide a layer of protection. AI tools can monitor website traffic in real-time to identify unusual patterns that may indicate a security threat, such as a cyber-attack or fraud.[4]

Finding and keeping talent: Recruiting top-level talent continues to be a small business challenge in 2025 and spas are no exception. Worldwide, spas are finding it difficult to recruit and keep workers to meet growing demand for services. [5] Some spas and massage practices may consider hiring part-time or freelance employees to meet the need. The most important thing to consider when it comes to employees is to ensure that you have a retention strategy that will encourage employees to stay for a long time. Foster a sense of community within the organization to make employees feel valued and supported.

Competitive Landscape: The spa market is growing. The demand for spa services is being driven by their health benefits, such as relief from stress, minimization of body pain, and the calmness offered. [6] Demand can attract more entrants into the marketplace, changing the competitive landscape. To stand out from the competition, focus on a particular type of client or area of need, such as prenatal or sports massage, and develop a unique selling proposition (USP). Develop both visual and verbal branding that establishes your niche.

Increase your resilience to deal with small business challenges

No matter what the challenge is you cannot give up. Martin Zwilling, founder and CEO of Startup Professionals, offers the following tips on developing resistance to succeed:[7]

·         Maintain active optimism – observe how others were successful in similar situations and believe you can do the same.

·         Find courage to take decisive action – building decisiveness requires eliminating fear, procrastination, and the urge to please everyone.

·         Let a good moral compass guide you - honesty, integrity, fidelity, and ethical behavior work best in business and personal life.

·         Show relentless tenacity and determination – decide that giving up is simply not an option.

·         Gain strength from the support of others – practice active listening and show appreciation.

Challenges are a fact of business life. Know what challenges are coming down the road and prepare yourself and your team to deal with them.
