When it comes to protecting and preserving the environment, consumers are making their demands known. Not only do they want accessible and affordable offerings, but they also want them to be safe for the environment. Sustainability is having a significant impact on companies as they seek ways to meet consumer expectations for a more eco-friendly and healthier lifestyle.
Sustainability practices are apparent across a wide range of industries, including massage therapy, which is evolving to meet growing concerns over the environment. Many massage therapists, either working as sole practitioners or for a company owned enterprise, are tackling the issue from several fronts. They are making sustainability a criterion for the products they purchase -- focusing on sourcing eco-friendly materials and working closely with sustainability partners -- and striving to decrease energy usage and decrease waste on a day-to-day basis.
It is important to keep in mind, too, that sustainability extends beyond the walls of business. Sustainability is about creating a community. Advocating for local environmental initiatives and collaborating with other businesses supporting sustainability expands the movement. Involvement in local events that educate the public and advance sustainability positions you as an active participant for sustainable change.
Benefits of sustainable massage practice
· A sustainable massage practice benefits the environment. Going green also enhances your massage practice.
· Expands your clientele by attracting clients who care about the environment. Sustainable business practices show clients and prospects you are doing your part to reduce your environmental footprint.
· Reduces operational costs by using more energy-efficient equipment, which can lower utility costs.
· Enhances your practice, differentiating your practice from other massage practitioners.
Sustainable massage practices
Some of the following sustainable massage practices already may be part of your business operations. If not, consider starting now to incorporate them into your practice.
Clean green: Massage therapy sustainability practices replace commercial cleaners that contain hazardous chemicals with products made from natural, biodegradable ingredients that are safe for both people and the environment. They clean homes and commercial properties with minimal impact on the planet. A natural product like vinegar is multipurpose. You can use it straight out of the container to clean floors, windows and counter tops and mix it with baking soda and essential oils for cleaning out sinks or toilets. Avoid cleaning with paper towels and disposal use wipes that just end up in landfills. Use rags and sponges made from natural fibers, instead.
Reduce water consumption: Install a drinking fountain instead of offering clients bottled water as part of your sustainability practices. Water-saving techniques, such as low-flow faucets, and mindful water use during treatments can conserve a significant amount of water.
Reduce waste: Choose reusable or biodegradable alternatives to single-use plastics. Make sure to recycle materials used in treatments. Use reusable plates, cups, and utensils. When it is time to get rid of old towels and blankets, donate them to a charitable resale shop or animal shelter. Consider sharing supplies with other spas or massage practitioners, such as an extra massage chair you have not been using.
Have recyclable bins and educate staff about proper sorting of waste products. Also get clients involved in proper waste management, directing them what bins to use for recycling, plastic water bottles, and packaging for food items they may have brought to the session.
Freshen the air naturally: Chemical fresh air cleaners can irritate the eyes and skin and cause breathing problems. Open doors and windows to let fresh air in and circulate. Also, as part of your sustainability practices, consider using fresh or dried flowers, lighting aromatherapy candles, or spraying aromatherapy mist to add a natural scent to your spa or massage practice.
Choose eco-friendly products
Offer natural and organic oils: One of the best ways to protect the planet and meet clients’ needs for purity is to use professional products that contain the fewest synthetic ingredients. Organic, sustainably sourced treatment products reduce exposure to harmful chemicals. Essential oils sourced sustainably from harvested plants, free from synthetic additives, nourish the skin and are environmentally responsible.
Use biodegradable linens: Utilize biodegradable or organic cotton linens to minimize environmental impact and support sustainable agriculture. Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without toxic pesticides and fertilizers, which can harm the environment.
Choose recycled or bamboo paper products: Choosing products like face cradles made from recycled paper or sustainable bamboo reduces damage to forests. Bamboo grows rapidly, requires minimal water, and requires no pesticide or fertilizer to thrive. This makes it a superior alternative to traditional wood pulp paper.
Look for eco-friendly packaging: Choose products with minimal or recyclable packaging to help reduce waste. Bulk purchasing also can cut down on packaging waste.
Energy efficient sustainable practices
By being energy efficient, you not only lower operational costs, but you also reduce your carbon footprint. Examples of sustainable energy-efficiency include:[1]
· Smart thermostat use: Install programmable thermostats for precise control of the room's temperature, ensuring it is only heated when necessary.
· LED lighting solutions: Replace traditional incandescent bulbs with LED lights to reduce energy consumption and generate less heat. This reduces the need for air conditioning.
· Efficient water heaters: Tankless water heaters provide hot water on demand, ensuring that energy is not wasted in maintaining the temperature of a large volume of water.
· Insulation and weatherproofing: Properly insulate massage rooms and seal any drafts to maintain a comfortable temperature with less energy usage
· Energy-efficient appliances: ENERGY STAR-certified appliances, such as towel warmers and laundry machines, can lead to significant energy savings over time.
Adopting sustainable practices helps the massage industry secure its place as a sustainable industry. Train our staff to put your sustainability issues into practice every day and spread the word about your commitment to the well-being of people and the planet to clients, who can help carry your message.
