With Thanksgiving just around the corner, family, friends and food are on most everyone’s mind. The holiday is the time of year for sumptuous feasts to be shared with loved ones. One ingredient sure to find its way into a range of holiday dishes is rosemary, one of the most aromatic of the herbs.

Native to the Mediterranean region, rosemary fittingly actually means “dew of the sea” in Latin. The rosemary bush, with its needle-like leaves, belongs to the mint family, which also includes basil, lavender, myrtle and sage. Rosemary essential oil comes mostly from the leaves.

Since ancient times, rosemary has been used for a number of both culinary and medicinal purposes and even religious ceremonies. The ancient Egyptians used it as incense. Paracelsus, a renowned German-Swiss physician who made significant contributions to herbal medicine, valued rosemary oil because of its ability to strengthen the body.

Rosemary also can improve memory and cognition. “Does Rosemary Actually Improve Your Memory and Cognition?” on Verywell Mind, cites a research study involving 28 older adults found that a consumption of a low dose, but not a higher dose, of dried rosemary powder, was associated with significantly improved memory speed.

Another study cited explored the effects of rosemary aroma on cognition. In this study, participants were exposed to the aroma of rosemary while they performed visual processing tasks and serial subtraction tasks. Both speed and accuracy in the tasks increased with exposure to higher amounts of the rosemary aroma.

Skin benefits

When it comes to skin, rosemary essential oil has a number of benefits and so is used in skin care cleansers, soaps, face masks, toners and creams. Rosemary essential oil contains a wide array of nutrients, including iron, calcium and vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is important for healthy hair and skin. Also, the antioxidants in rosemary essential oil help prevent skin damage and maximize skin tone by combatting free radicals. Massaging the skin with rosemary essential oil helps to eliminate dryness and aid toning.
