Massage Therapy Can Help Overcome Grief

Massage Magazine writes about the value of massage therapy in helping clients overcome grief.  Research reported in Science Daily, finds that receiving massage therapy eight weeks after a loved one passes on helped those suffering the loss cope.

The research involved 18 people ages 34-78 who had lost a relative to cancer. Participants said that the massages provided consolation and helped them to balance the need to grieve and the need to adapt to life after the loss of their relative.

Two massage therapists cited by Massage Magazine, Leslie Freeman and Annie Murphy, created bereavement therapy to help clients experiencing loss. To achieve this, Freeman told Massage Magazine that Bereavement Massage Therapy incorporates various modalities to address grief, and is not to be confused with end-of-life massage therapy, which helps to ease the transition of the dying from one realm to another. Bereavement Massage Therapy focuses on reconnecting the grieving client to their body.

Bereavement Massage Therapy uses flat-hand vibration, gentle rocking and comfort holds to loosen and calm disconnected areas. It also incorporates such techniques as reflexology, polarity, Swedish massage and craniosacral techniques. Read more.
