How to add more joy to your spa and massage practice and your life

I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I hope it was not only a profitable time for your spa or massage practice but also a day filled with joy in sharing time with loved ones. While Mother’s Day and other holidays allow us to celebrate and share special moments with friends and family, you don’t want to wait for a special day to find joy. Experiencing joy should be something you aim for every day. While that may sound idealistic, the fact is that you have a choice about how you conduct your life. After all, by being a professional in the spa or massage industry, you have chosen a career that helps others feel good. It stands to reason that you, too, should want to feel good as possible every day.

While there is no one path to finding joy in your life, there are some things you can do.

Change your story

Think about how you describe yourself and your achievements to others. Maybe you aren’t giving yourself enough credit for your accomplishments. Try rewriting your story to emphasize things you are proud of in your professional and personal life. When you change the story to focus on the positive, you change your attitude and allow more joy into your life.

Take on a new challenge

There’s enormous joy in taking on a new challenge and mastering it. You can challenge yourself in your career by learning new types of massage or skincare treatments. Maybe the challenge is more personal, such as learning how to play an instrument, taking up a sport, or studying a foreign language. It doesn’t matter what the challenge it. The joy comes from your determination to succeed and doing so.

Be forgiving

It’s difficult to feel joy when you are harboring resentment or negative feelings about someone else. While you may not forget something that someone did to hurt you, you can forgive them.  Bearing grudges end up harming you more than the other person. If possible, try to repair relationships that were damaged because of something that happened in the past. Don’t let resentment rule your life.

Count your blessings

Focus on those things in your life that you are grateful for. Doing so will inspire you to feel better about yourself and the things in your life.

Emphasize the positive

Try to be positive. A negative thought can spiral out of control and overshadow all the positive things happening in your life. Make an effort to focus on what’s positive in your life. Reinforce the positive elements by choosing positive words when talking to others.

Unplug

You need to take time for yourself to remove yourself from day-to-day pressures and unwind. Take a walk, listen to music, sit at a café and watch the world go by, or take a long, relaxing bath – or even a massage – and let your worries and cares drift off.

Volunteer

Get involved with a not for profit or community organization. By positively impacting the lives of others, you get immense satisfaction and joy. Even if you can’t commit to an ongoing volunteer effort, even getting involved occasionally can boost your spirits.

These are just some things you can do to have more joy in your life every day. Also, surround yourself with supportive people who help you share in the joy you discover.
