Many of your clients may be asking you about CBD oil and for good reason.  It’s enjoying a great deal of popularity because it has the unique characteristic of being both a natural and yet state-of-the-art ingredient for managing pain. CBD or Cannabidiol is a cannabis compound. While not new, CBD has over the past few years emerged as a therapeutic agent in a number of medical conditions.

The use of CBD dates back to the 19th century when it was used by Queen Victoria for menstrual cramps. But, it was not until the 1980s that studies indicated that CBD could alleviate certain types of pain, anxiety and discomfort.

In 1998 a pharmaceutical company began to cultivate cannabis for medical trials. It believed that cannabis plants rich in CBD could be used for medicine. Early animal studies showed that CBD lessened anxiety and reduced the frequency and severity of seizures. Cannabis strains began to be cultivated with extremely low levels of THC and high levels of CBD.

CBD Oil today

CBD is either derived from industrial hemp plants or marijuana plants. However, unlike THC, the mind-altering ingredient found in cannabis, CBD is not mind-altering or habit-forming. It is absorbed through the skin where it binds to the body’s own CB2 receptors. Once it connects with these receptors, CBD has a pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect on the body.

Because of its potential for providing a cure for a range of health problems, estimates for the growth of CBD oil are very optimistic. A new report by cannabis/legal marijuana market analysts firm Hemp Business Journal projects that the CBD market will grow to $2.1 billion by 2020, an astronomical jump in value compared to last year's cannabidiol (CBD) market of $202 million.

The health potential of CBD oil underlies BIOTONE’s move into the market this year. Our new Lab + Blends product line includes CBD Massage Cream and CBD Massage Balm for use in professional treatment clinics. For at-home use, BIOTONE offers CBD Pain Relief Maximum Strength Cream, CBD Daily Dose Oral Tincture and CBD Pain Salve Rapid Action Relief.

Researchers applied a topical gel containing CBD to rats with arthritis for 4 days. The researchers noted a significant drop in inflammation and signs of pain, without additional side effects

Are there side effects of CBD oil?

  • According to the World Health Organization,  “CBD does not produce the effects typically seen with other cannabinoids such as THC. It also failed to produce significant effects in a human study of abuse potential… Across a number of controlled and open label trials of the potential therapeutic effects of CBD, it generally is well tolerated and has a good safety profile.”

  • Healthline also reports that CBD is generally well tolerated in most people. However, some side effects noted in studies of CBD taken orally have included: nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, anxiety and depression and appetite changes.
